Called to Life An Invitation to a Missional Way of Being, is an invitation to explore faith, meaning, and life within the missional context. Rather than answer questions, the book seeks to encourage you in the asking of the questions you carry upon your heart, looking deeply in your searching, and to ask you to be open to transformation. The book recognizes that, in responding to God’s call to life, we can be inspired to live into a new way of being. Along the journey, conversations will uncover… Meaning in the revealing of a larger truth; God alive and at work in the world; A life of integrity even in the midst of uncertainty and tension; Language which frees us to respond with imagination and improvisation; A place in the larger story of God's love; Avenues to meaningful change in our lives. Through the narrative experience found in scripture and in the lives of ordinary people, the book identifies the principles of integrity, imagination, and improvisation to provide navigation along the journey. In exploring integrity, the book begins with real questions that emerge from our own lives and considers them within the context of the missional life. The book then looks at one of the most powerful ways to experience this journey which is to be open to a conversion of the imagination; that is, to imagine a world through God’s eyes. Understanding missional imagination is to respond with improvisation. Even in the face of uncertainty, we are invited to contribute to a story, rather than a script, of our lives, to experiment and improvise, and to understand the transformative nature of relationship. The book offers stories of the incarnational nature of God’s call and seeks to inspire you in the telling of your story. The book hopes to provide sustenance and encouragement for all who seek to discern and answer God’s call to life.

Called to Life An Invitation to a Missional Way of Being (9781453791011) Rev. John C. Hage, Ellen Creed Branham Books Reviews

I have read the book several times now and each time I've gotten something different out of it. I chose to read it like a Joseph Campbell book the first time. Slowly. One chapter a day. I enjoyed each chapter and confess to having even downloaded some of the "playlist" songs. While there were several stories I personally related to, my favorite chapter was on Improvisation. This is a book that will make you slow life down enough to reconsider how you can best serve God and each other.
Reading and thinking through this book feels like taking a road trip, as the subtitle indicates. The journey is filled with fascinating conversation partners - from Thomas Merton to John Calvin to Bob Pittman (Chairman of MTV) to Steven Covey - probing questions, and even a playlist of suggested songs to reflect on in light of each chapter. I highly recommend this book for individuals and/or groups interested in living life more fully and meaningfully, regardless of where you are on your spiritual pilgrimage.
Church members continue to be drawn to missional language and a missional way of life, but finding the language to describe what missional means can be a challenge. John and Ellen's new book will go a long way toward giving church members a clear sense of what the word means. And best of all, they do it in a highly personal and engaging manner. It's often a tall order to collaborate on a book like this, but John and Ellen have done a masterful job of keeping both of their voices in the text - and each voice is one that should be heard. I think this book will advance the case for re-thinking the church's mission in the world.
