What a good read! Short and sweet. Action, romance, suspense and mystery!Quick summary (no spoilers):
This tale takes place in England at the end of the middle ages. Roseanne Winter, age 18, dons a mask and cape to become the Black Rose - a fiercely independent and intelligent crusader who steals from the rich and corrupt to provide for the poor and persecuted in her little town; each time leaving a single black rose in place of the coins she takes. While all the other young women of the town concern themselves with gentlemen suitors, socializing and buying new dresses, the Black Rose concerns herself solely with keeping the poorest families out of debtors prison. By day, Miss Winter tries to blend in with the rest of the townsfolk while hearing tales of her own doings from the night before.
With the help of an accomplice or two, all goes well with this pattern of take and give until an unknown man shows up in town.
His goal? Put an end to the Black Rose and her string of robberies. Conflicts begin to ensue, sweeping several characters and a sinister backstory up with it, as the lines between good, evil, moral and immoral start to blur.
All-in-all, a highly recommended read! Good for all ages. Being shorter, there's not a lot of wait time to the plot action - the tale jumps right in from page one. To sum up, this is a well-written debut novel that grabs your attention (and keeps it!), draws you right in, and leaves you hoping for a sequel.
