I love discovering new authors, and while most readers are gun-shy these days about taking a chance, I dive in head first. This story was a very pleasant surprise! I don’t think I’ve teared up so much from reading a story in I don’t know how long…Tyler is a poor, white trailer park kid, while Destiny is a poor, black girl living in the projects. The odds are already stacked against them-not because of who they are but because of who they are not-wealthy. They’ve known one another since kindergarten and have been rivals ever since. They’ve always competed to outdo one another academically, and just as they reach their final weeks of high school, they both have an opportunity to win a full scholarship to escape their dirt water town and better their lives through education. There’s one problem though: Neither gets the full ride they were banking on. Not to be deterred, they work tirelessly to come up with a solution that will be mutually beneficial to them both, and it’s the most unconventional, yet interesting plan I’ve ever read in a romance: Apply for a scholarship for married couples only and get a full ride. What?! After some deliberating and debating, they both decide to go for it because while they aren’t exactly enemies, marriage is a whole other ball of wax, and mind you, these kids are just eighteen! But when the desire and determination to make something better of your life outweighs the means, then caution is thrown to the wind, and Tyler and Destiny do what they gotta do…
They were warned the journey would be long and the road would be rough, and we witness this through a series of juvenile mistakes and mishandling of situations. This story never felt preachy in any way, but just a telling of events that were at times heartbreaking but totally relatable on some level. Anyone who knows what it’s like to have to struggle for what they want will get it. Anyone who has experienced young love will get it. I really liked Tyler and Destiny and watching their story unfold, and I would have probably given the story 5 stars if it weren’t for the numerous spelling and grammatical errors. These errors weren’t overly distracting, but they could have been easily avoided with the help of an editor or proofreader. With that being said, I still would recommend this story. It’s such a sweet tale of overcoming the odds.

A Chance at Destiny edition by Lilah K London Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
Cheating is a trigger of mine. I hate it. With a few exceptions if a hero or heroine cheats on the other I will stop reading it. Therefore I was hesitate to read this story because a few readers made the comment that the hero did something that the heroine needed to forgive him for. Given that they are so young and immature and newly married, I was afraid that he cheated on her. I asked readers if he did but did not get a response, so I am assuming that no one saw my question. I waited to buy it and after awhile I finally took the plunge. Spoilers marked below.
BEGINNING OF SPOILERS
The hero did cheat but did not go all the way. It may seem like semantics to some but I have a line. The line is penetration and oral smex with a completed act, in other words the cheat reaches satisfaction. Here there was none of that but I was disappointed nevertheless in the hero fooled around with OW while married to the heroine. In other words he did cheat but he did not cross my line. If he had, this review would be negative. It is that important to me. I was thankful to it was not shown rather he admired to what occurred to the heroine in very little detail.
END OF SPOILERS
The story was interesting. I read it in one sitting and the premise was unique. Two poor teenagers marry to qualify for a scholarship for married couples that pays full four year college tuition and housing. The story was about their growth and development as both individuals and a married couple. While realistic at times their immaturity was irritating. Neither had a relationship before and made a lot of mistakes, the hero more than her as discussed in the spoiler section of this review. There was a lot of unnecessary of drama with both of them blowing hot and cold with each other. I thought she punished him too long for his behavior but then again, I have been lucky and no one has done that to me. I liked the HEA but wish the epilogue was further in the future then four years. They still had a lot of trying times to get through given that is how marriage is. Still being married after 4 years is no guarantee that they will be together long term, especially when they were married as teenagers.
I stumbled on A Chance at Destiny via friends on Goodreads and, I decided to give it a chance based on the price point. I'm always excited to read work by new indie authors, however, this story left me unfulfilled. Ms. London, the premise is phenomenal. It could be a potent five-star story, but it didn't work for me for two reasons 1) The writing was elementary at times. In some instances, simple is great but the phrasing of sentences read along the lines of, "See spot run" dialogue. In my opinion, with the assistance of a great editor to help structure sentences and cut out a lot of unnecessary filler, this story could be amazing. 2) The excessive grammatical errors. It was clear to me that little to no proofreading happened before this book was published. Had there been additional sets of eyes, a lot of the egregious errors would've likely been caught. Ms. London, I commend you for having the courage to write your story as you envisioned it. I think with some adjustments, you have a true gem on your hands. Tyler and Destiny were likable characters, but I was missing the overall cohesiveness that helps a story flow flawlessly. I wish you the best in your future writing endeavors.
